C-9 — GREAT ZIMBABWE: THE CITY THEY REFUSED TO CREDIT TO ITS OWN BUILDERS

For decades, colonial authorities insisted the stone city of Great Zimbabwe could not have been built by the ancestors of the Shona people who lived around it, crediting it instead to Phoenicians or the Queen of Sheba. Archaeology closed that argument decades ago.

I. Built By the People Denied Credit For It

Great Zimbabwe was built between roughly 1100 and 1450 CE by the ancestors of the Shona people, in what is now southeastern Zimbabwe. It is the largest medieval stone complex in sub-Saharan Africa, covering nearly 800 hectares. UNESCO’s own listing states plainly that it was founded by a Bantu Iron Age population, with no outside builders involved.

II. Stone Without Mortar

The Great Enclosure — the largest single ancient structure south of the Sahara — was built entirely in dry-stone construction: granite blocks, quarried and shaped locally, fitted in courses without mortar, some walls standing over thirty feet and lasting more than seven centuries.

III. A Trading City, Not an Isolated One

At its peak, Great Zimbabwe supported an estimated 10,000 to 18,000 people at the center of a trade network reaching the Indian Ocean. Archaeologists have recovered Chinese ceramics, Middle Eastern glass beads, and coins from the Swahili city of Kilwa on-site.

IV. The Lie, and Who Told It

When colonial administrators in Southern Rhodesia encountered the ruins, the prevailing position was that African people could not have built them. Theories crediting Phoenicians, Arabs, or the Biblical Queen of Sheba circulated for decades. Archaeology closed the argument in the 20th century. The stones never moved. Only the willingness to say who built them changed.
